Sealand x Sick!Reader - Lilacs and 'Get Well' Cards

(A/N - Imagine that you are about 12 years old in this story.)

Winter was slowly approaching in the town of ___(t/n)___. The temperatures always dove down to near freezing at this time of year. The town had already seen its first snow, but it had melted soon after. It was around mid-November, after Thanksgiving was over and the time when distant relatives started traveling back to their own homes. It was the season for scarves, down jackets, and gloves, which almost everyone in ___(t/n)___ was wearing now.

Unfortunately, it was also the cold and flu season, and that meant absent students from school and people calling in sick for work. And guess who had caught the flu bug just the other day?

That's right. You.

It was terrible. You always felt tired, but you couldn't seem to rest. You were throwing up a lot, and the only thing you had eaten today was applesauce. You were coughing constantly, your sinuses were blocked, and your throat was so scratchy that you could only talk in a whisper. Your headaches were incessant, and no medicine your mom gave you ever helped. Sure, some of it may have helped a little, but it still wasn't enough.

"I called the principal and told her you were sick," your mom told you. "She said that she would tell your class about it."

"Okay," you said in a hoarse whisper.

Now, about your class... wasn't there a boy in your class that you liked? Yes, of course there was. You had known him since kindergarten. He had dark blonde hair, sea blue eyes, and the cutest British accent. What was this boy's name? Oh, right... it was Peter. Peter Kirkland.

You had first met Peter in kindergarten after he chased away some older kids that were picking on you. Afterwards, the two of you became good friends, and you always sat by each other at lunch time. Later, you learned that he had an older brother named Arthur, whom he referred to as "Jerk England."

However, you and Peter were getting to that awkward stage where girls started getting crushes on cute guys and vice versa. You noticed that you were both blushing around each other, and you two could hardly think of anything to talk about. When he did talk to you, his eyes would dart around and he would shift his weight from one foot to the other. In addition, when he had tried to say something to you, he got too nervous and bid you goodbye hastily.

Because of all the above actions, you suspected that he had a crush on you. You later brushed away the thought, thinking it impossible that such a big-hearted rascal could contract this contagious feeling. Besides, how could he get a crush on you if you were not the prettiest girl in school? But then again... it was a hypothesis just waiting to be confirmed true.

At around 3:15 p.m., you heard the doorbell ring from downstairs. Your mother answered it, since you were still in your bed.

"Oh, hello, Peter," you heard her say.

Peter? Here? Now? Why was he here anyway?

"Um... can I see _________? I heard she was sick with the flu, so I wanted to visit her," Peter replied. You had a hunch that he was blushing when he said that.

"Well... I suppose it's all right. Just be sure to wash your hands before you leave. I don't want you getting sick, too," your mom advised him.

"All right," Peter said.

You heard his footsteps come up the stairs and down the hallway until they stopped at your door. There was a moment of silence, and then you heard a knock on the wooden door leading into your bedroom.

"_________? May I come in?" Peter asked.

You coughed and, after blowing your nose, replied, "Yes, Peter. You may come in."

The door opened, and there stood your friend Peter Kirkland, with his face  red as a tomato. When he saw your sick figure, his eyes widened with concern and he rushed over to your bedside. "_________! You look worse than I thought!" Peter said, his eyes nearly watering. "I - I didn't know you were this sick!"

"Well, I get through it," you said, coughing again. You tried to smile to calm your friend down, but the corners of your mouth refused to turn up.

"Does your mum give you medicine, _________?" Peter asked desperately, sitting down on the bed. He looked like he was about to cry.

"Yes, Peter," you say with a slight smile. "But sometimes it doesn't work. I have a lot of symptoms, so it's hard for my mom to figure out what medicine she should give me."

"I see..." Peter mumbled. His cheeks turned red again when he realized how close he was to you.

You picked up a book off of your nightstand - it was a book you had been looking at and reading since you were little - and began to page through it silently. It had pictures of all kinds of flowers and their symbolic meanings. Every day you would skim through it and find a page or two that you liked, and read about the different meanings that these flowers carried with them. Under the picture of each flower was also a short paragraph that told what it would mean to the recipient if someone gave them a bouquet of these kinds of flowers. This was your most favorite book that you picked up whenever you got bored and wanted something to do.

Peter noticed you looking at the book and asked you, "What are you reading, _________?"

"Oh, it's a book about flowers and what their meanings are," you explained to your friend.

"Flowers have meanings?" Peter asked, raising an eyebrow.

"Yes," you responded, nodding your head. "They are secret meanings that are hidden within each flower. For example, a daisy..." You pointed at the picture so Peter could see which flower you were talking about. "...is a symbol of innocence."

"What about this one, _________?" Peter inquired, pointing to a lavender-colored flower on the same page.

"Oh, those are purple lilacs," you said. "They mean... 'first love.' If you give a bouquet of these flowers to someone, it shows the first emotions of love the giver has. For example, if someone around your age or older gave a bouquet of lilacs to a girl he liked, it means that he is the first one to fall in love with her."

Peter looked at you, and then the book. Then, a big smile came across his features. He jumped off your bed and went to the doorway of your room.

"What is it, Peter?" you asked, confused.

"You just gave me a great idea, _________! I'm going to come back tomorrow with a surprise for you! You'll see!" he said with an excited tone of voice.

You heard him go into the bathroom and wash his hands. Then his footsteps sounded down the stairs, and rustling indicated that he was putting his winter clothes back on. Finally, your ears detected the opening and closing of the front door, which meant that Peter had left already.

Your mother appeared in the doorway and asked you, "Why did Peter rush out of the house so soon, _________? Was he late for something?"

"No," you said while shaking your head. "He said that he would come back tomorrow and bring a surprise for me. Then he just rushed out the door."

"A little... mysterious, if you ask me," your mother said with a little smirk. Then she walked out of your room and back down the stairs.

You smiled a little after she left the room. Happily, you wondered what Peter's surprise for you would be. While pondering this thought, you decided to take a nap. You needed the rest, anyway.

~*Time Skip*~

The next day, at around 3:25 in the afternoon, the doorbell rang suddenly. Once again, as before, your mom answered it.

"Hello again, Peter," you hear her say.

"Hello, Mrs. ___(l/n)___. May I go see _________ now?" your friend asked.

"Yes you may, Peter. Just be sure to wash your hands before you leave."

"All right, Mrs. ___(l/n)___."

Your ears picked up the sound of Peter walking up the stairs. This time, as he stood before your bedroom door, there was no hesitation in knocking. Then you heard him say, "_________? Close your eyes, okay?"

You did as he told you, and said, "My eyes are closed, Peter!" Then you waited for him to enter your room.

"No peeking!" Peter advised you. The sound of the door opening reached your eardrums, as well as the sound of Peter's footsteps wandering about the room.

You felt some pressure being applied to the right side of your bed, and then your friend told you, "Okay, _________! You can open your eyes now!"

You opened your eyes and saw Peter sitting beside you with a very faint blush on his face. Despite this dead giveaway, he was still smiling widely.

"Here, _________," Peter said, handing you what seemed to be a home-made card. "I wrote this for you... I hope you like it."

You took the card from his hands and looked at it. On the front, it said: "To _________, From Peter." When you opened the card, it revealed a message that said, "Get Well Soon!" Under that message was a simple drawing of Peter and you smiling with a big heart in both of your hands.

"I tried my best," Peter said, referring to the picture. "I don't draw that well, but I really tried to make it look good..."

"It's... beautiful, Peter," you said with a big smile. You gave him a big bear hug and told him, "Thank you very much."

After he was released from your arms, Peter's blush increased. He then said, "I also have one more thing for you, _________."

He picked up something that he had put on the ground earlier, and handed it to you. When you saw it, you couldn't believe your eyes! It was a huge bouquet of purple lilacs in a beautiful crystal vase!

Peter put the lilac-filled vase on your nightstand and explained the reason for getting them. "_________, when you showed me the picture of the lilacs and I read the meaning of it... I knew that giving you this bouquet was the way I could say that I liked you a lot... so, with that out of the way... do you like me back?"

A rosy blush stained your own cheeks and you looked at Peter with wide ___(e/c)___ eyes. Your hypothesis was... correct?! He actually liked you?!

You had to question this outside of your thoughts, so you asked him, "Why do you like me, Peter? I'm not exactly called the 'pretty' one in school..."

Peter put his hand on yours and responded, "It's not about how you look, _________. What matters is that you're a pretty girl on the inside... if you get what I'm saying."

You shrugged and said, "I kind of get it."

Peter nodded. "So... do you like me back, _________?"

After a moment of silence, your face broke into a big smile and you said to your friend, "Yes, Peter. I do like you back."

"Great!" Peter said, excited. "Then I guess you won't mind me giving you... this." With that being said, he planted a quick kiss on your cheek.

Since your feelings were now out in the open, you didn't hesitate to return the kiss with a small blush on your own cheeks. After this happy moment, you gave Peter another bear hug, and he did not hesitate to hug you back tighter. This was possibly the greatest moment of your entire life. Peter liked you... and you liked him back. Everything was right in the world.

When the both of you had finished hugging, you asked Peter, "Do you want to watch a Disney movie?"

"Sure, _________!" he said excitedly.

You dove off of your bed - not literally! - and chose Peter Pan out of your shelf of movies. You then turned on the TV, put the video cassette in the VCR, grabbed the remote, and sat back down on the bed next to Peter.

As always, whenever you watched a movie, you skipped through the previews, and pressed the "play" button when you saw the words FEATURE PRESENTATION pop up on the screen. Then you put the remote on your nightstand and watched the magical introduction to Peter Pan.

About halfway through the movie, you started to nod off. Your eyelids drooped, and you couldn't stay awake any longer. Your head fell on Peter's shoulder, making you fall asleep instantly.

Peter gasped and looked over at you. When he saw you were fast asleep already, a small blush came over his cheeks and he smiled. He gave you a kiss on the top of your head and laid his head on top of yours.

So... this is what happens when I like a girl, Peter thought. I wonder what it will be like if we dated...
